Stamford Shock Wraps a Successful Season

STAMFORD, Conn. — The Stamford Shock completed its travel basketball season with an overall record of record of 17-5.  The Shock finished second in its division in regular season play with a 9-1 record, suffering its only division loss to eventual Fairfield County Basketball League champion Carver Center – Norwalk.

The Shock had some key wins in 2012 as they prepared for the playoffs, including key victories over Monroe, St. Theresa’s of Trumbull, Greenwich Flame and Ridgefield.

The Shock got off to a slow start against Monroe but relied on strong defense and a 23-point fourth quarter outburst to win 53-42.  The Shock’s guards provided most of the scoring, led by Bobby Cribbin with 16 points.

A 19-point fourth quarter paced the Shock to victory over St. Theresa’s, 53-42??.  Kevin Costello led the Shock with 14 points, including three 3-pointers, and Conor Nicholson chipped in 13 points.

The Shock played a very tough game against the Greenwich Flame in Greenwich and won, 56-43. Once again, Stamford erupted in the fourth quarter for 21 points, led by Nicholson, who scored 12 of his 16 points in the final period. Grant Purpura scored 12 points and Kevin Costello netted 11 for the Shock. Jahmani Thornton chipped in 10 points and he and Tevin St. John were dominant on the boards for the winners.

The Shock visited Ridgefield in its final tuneup before the playoffs. In what became the norm late in the season, the Shock capitalized on a 24-point fourth quarter in defeating Ridgefield, 54-51. Thornton led all scorers with 16 points, and Brian Noone (eight points) hit five key free throws to seal the victory.

Stamford drew a tough first-round playoff opponent in eventual FCBL championship finalist Mount Vernon. In a fast-paced up and down the court game, Stamford found itself on the wrong side of a 42-38 score. Head coach Mike Carroll commented that he was proud of his team’s defensive effort against an explosive Mount Vernon team and that he was pleased with the Shock’s success in the 2011-2012 season.

The Stamford Shock sixth-grade team is coached by Mike Carroll, assisted by Gary Purpura. Team members are Ryan Carroll, Kevin Costello, Bobby Cribbin, Sam Lombino, Conor Nicholson, Brian Noone, Grant Purpura, James Sassi, Tevin St. John and Jahmani Thornton.
