Stamford Senior Legion Advances in States

STAMFORD, Conn. -- Stamford's Senior American Legion team advanced to the double-elimination round of the state tournament Wednesday with a 13-7 victory over RCP in Cromwell. RCP is a co-operative team that includes players from several communities.

The victory puts Stamford in the final 16, which begin play Saturday in the double-elimination round. Stamford meets top-seeded Branford Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Palmer Field in Middletown.

Steve Hagedus pitched 7 1/3 innings for Stamford before Frank Spoto and Ryan Curto came on to get the final five outs. Brandon Docimo led the offense with five hits, while R.J. Calo smacked a three-run double. Eric Joyner, Alex Rough and Hagedus also had multiple hit games for Stamford, which scored six runs over the first two innings and was never headed.

Stamford defeated Enfield, 13-5, in its first state tournament game. Stamford finished the regular season 15-12 in Zone 4. It won six of its last eight games to reach the state tournament.
