Iona College's Schadrac Casimir, a freshman from Stamford, was named the MAAC Player of the Week for the second time this season.

The freshman guard, who played at Trinity Catholic under Mike Walsh, was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the second time this season this week. He was also named the ECAC co-Rookie of the Week.

Casimir broke a 34-year-old school record with a 40-point outburst in a 126-76 win over Delaware State. His total matched the highest single-game scoring output in a game this season. He made 11-of-13 from the field, and his eight 3-pointers set a freshman record.

Casimir earned the MAAC award in the first week of the season. He entered the week 10th among conference scorers.

For the year, Casimir is averaging 14.2 points per game. He has started all six games for the Gaels (4-2), and averages more than 29 minutes per game.

Iona already has a signature win this season, an 85-81 victory over Wake Forest of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Casimir scored 20 points in his college debut, a 78-73 win over Cleveland State.

After a standout career at Trinity, Casimir played one year at South Kent School.

Iona finished 22-11 last year, and lost in the championship game of the MAAC Tournament to Manhattan. The Gaels lost in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament to Louisiana Tech.

Iona plays Sunday at Monmouth and returns home Wednesday against Rider. Casimir makes his debut as a collegian in Connecticut on Feb. 2 in Bridgeport when Iona plays Fairfield.
