Stamford 8th-Graders Fall to Fairfield

STAMFORD, Conn. – The Stamford Youth Basketball eighth-grade boys basketball team brought an impressive 7-1 record into Saturday’s game against Fairfield. Coach Mike Layton’s squad found out, however, that there other strong teams in the Fairfield County Basketball League.

Fairfield held Stamford to its lowest offensive output of the season in a 57-40 victory. Cameron Kelly scored 18 for Stamford (8-2), which bounced back Sunday with a 44-37 win over Westport. Fairfield plays in a tougher division of the league, and Stamford is 5-1 in its division.

“This was a little bit of a wakeup call for us,’’ coach Mike Layton said. “Fairfield is an excellent team, and they outplayed us. We just didn’t play strong enough.”

Stamford has a strong offensive team led by Cameron Kelly, Aaron Wheeler, Stephon Alexis and Jay DeVito. Fairfield expanded the lead in the third quarter to 45-35, but Stamford got it to within six early in the final period before Fairfield pulled away for good.

Stamford trails the Greenwich Boys & Girls Club (5-0) in the Boys CC Division of the Fairfield County Basketball League. Stamford has three games this weekend, against Wilton, Westport and Bethel. It could a long way toward defining just how good Stamford is. “There are a lot of good teams in this league,’’ Layton said. “The season overall has been pretty good. Just today we weren’t aggressive as we needed to be.”
