Stamford 8th-Graders Capture Basketball Crown

After winning back-to-back regular season championships as 6th- and 7th-graders, the Stamford Youth Basketball 8th-grade Huskies added a postseason championship to their trophy case with a heart-stopping 57-56 overtime win over Newtown on Sunday in the championship game of the Fairfield County Basketball League A East Division.

Stamford trailed by nine at halftime, but used a 10-0 run to start the third quarter and led by four entering the fourth quarter. But Newtown would not go away. Newtown had a chance to win it at the buzzer at the end of regulation and in overtime. Both shots missed, however, as Stamford hung on.

Tyrell St. John (16 points), Jalen Latta (15 points) and Jeremiah Livingston (13 points) led Stamford offensively. James Gronberg added six points during the third-quarter run, while Kweshon Askew contributed four points and Sean Morris, three.

Justin Chase, Peter Horn, Kevin Florio and John Costello also had good games, contributing on the boards and providing strong defensive efforts.

Stamford finished the season 12-7 after going 4-6 in league play. It defeated St. Theresa of Trumbull and Wakeman of Fairfield to reach the final. Wakeman had defeated Stamford twice during the regular season.
