Stamford 6th-Graders Jump Out to 5-0 Start

STAMFORD, Conn. — The Stamford sixth-grade boys basketball travel team has jumped out to a 5-0 start and stands in first place in its division in the Fairfield County Basketball League.

Stamford opened the season with a 43-24 win over Brookfield. Conor Nicholson led all scorers with 13 points. Jahmani Thornton and Sam Lombino also played well offensively. On defense, Brian Noone and Bobby Cribbin combined for nine steals.

Stamford, whose nickname is the Shock, routed Bridgeport-McGiveny, 58-21, in its second game. The guard duo of Brian Noone and Grant Purpura led all scorers with 12 points apiece. Sam Lombino also played well, connecting on all six of his free throws.

The Shock also defeated St. Mary’s of Ridgefield, 50-34. Kevin Costello led all scorers with 11 points. Jahmani Thornton was overwhelming on the glass, collecting 19 rebounds.

Stamford’s first real test came against Stratford. Stamford started off hot, but Stratford went on a 12-2 second-period run to take a 16-13 halftime lead. The shocked Shock rebounded in third quarter, and pulled away to a 54-44 victory. The dynamic guard duo of Conor Nicholson (17 points) and Grant Purpura (13 points) led all scorers. Brian Noone and Ryan Carroll played excellent defense, stopping the three-point shooting team from Stratford.

The Shock continued its strong start Saturday with a 57-36 win over New Fairfield.

Stamford, coached by Mike Carroll and assistant Gary Purpura, returns to the court Jan. 7 when it visits the Carver Center in Norwalk for a 5:45 p.m. game. Carver is 3-0 in the league and 5-1 overall. Its only loss was 59-47 setback to the undefeated Fairfield 76ers.
