STAMFORD, Conn. The showdown between two Little League powerhouses is set for Sunday after the champions of Springdale and North Stamford cruised to mercy-rule wins in the semifinals of the Stamford Tournament of Champions.
Sundays title game is set for 5 p.m. at Caporizzo Field on Vine Road. North Stamford will be represented by undefeated Haggerty Pools (23-0). Springdales representative is Clairol (20-1).
Haggerty Pools defeated Stamford Northrop in Thursdays semifinals, 15-0. Grant Purpura and Noah Skaug combined on the no-hitter for Haggerty. The North Stamford champion scored two runs in the first inning and was never in trouble. Haggerty had escaped with a 2-0 win over Stamford Federal in its opening game of the tournament.
Clairol won 14-4 over the Cubs of the National Lione Little League in the semifinals. Alex Colon pitched a complete game, while Nico Kydes had four hits, including a home run. Devan Senecal added three hits, and Joe Price had two hits and four RBIs.
Clairol also escaped defeat in its opening-round game, as it rallied from a 6-3 deficit to defeat PAL of the Stamford American Little League, 7-6. Kydes walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth to force Senecal home with the winning run. Kydes pitched four strong innings, fanning nine and allowing two earned runs.
Clairol won 18 straight games before losing in its regular-season finale to Instant Replay.
