Runners from Family Centers, Toyota of Stamford and all over Fairfield County will lace up their sneakers to give local families a holiday to remember.

Beginning at 10 a.m., teams of runners will take to several treadmills at Underground Fitness’ 473 Hope St. location in Stamford to cover the 26.2-mile marathon distance – all while raising funds to purchase holiday gifts and basic living necessities for Stamford families in need.

The event, dubbed the Marathon on Myrtle, is an annual fundraising collaboration between Family Centers and Toyota of Stamford.

“Events like this allow us to strengthen our relationships in the community, while raising funds and awareness for Family Centers and all the people it serves,” said Brandon Campbell, Toyota of Stamford’s General Sales Manager.

Fitness professionals will be on hand to provide runners and attendees with body fat screenings, heart rate monitoring and fitness instruction.

Casey’s Tavern, located at 85 Woodside St. in Stamford, will host a post-relay party beginning at 6 p.m.  Bottomless cups of Miller Lite will be on sale for $5, with all proceeds benefiting the “Marathon on Myrtle”.  The event will also feature a 50/50 drawing and live music.

Last year’s inaugural event raised more than $5,000. In addition to supporting Stamford families, the Marathon on Myrtle also raises funds to allow Family Centers to offer preschool scholarships.
