STAMFORD, Conn. – The Rippowam junior varsity football team defeated Cloonan, 20-6, to win the Stamford Youth Foundation Middle School championship on Sunday at Boyle Stadium.
Rippowam finished the season 8-0, and has lost just once in the past two seasons. Dolan nipped Rippowam, 13-12, in the 2011 junior varsity title game. Rippowam's varsity team also won the league championship.
Matthew Valentin’s 14-yard run staked Rippowam to an early lead. Julius Page returned a fumble 45 yards for a touchdown, and Valentin ran for the conversion to give Rippowam a 14-0 lead in the second quarter.
Cloonan quarterback Kevin Costello hit Quran Cameron with a 21-yard touchdown pass to trim the lead, but Rippowam iced the victory on a 27-yard touchdown pass from Michael Riddle to Ky-Mani Pollack.
Rippowam’s roster is Jeff Bivona, Michael Riddle, Derek Strong, Kyle Bernard, Jack Dwing, Ellio Soto, Julius Page, Stefon Palmer, Rasheed Constant, Jaden Spanakos, Laudo Cardona, Karl Davis, Jonathan Oliveri, Isaiah Williams, Ben Buono, Matthew Valentine, Soufiane Masrour, Brendan Martin, Ky-Mani Pollack, Lenny Garcia, Christopher Ciacciarella, Jake Heerman, Kevin Conley, William Cahoon, Tajar Medley, Michael Aguilar, Harry Mascolo and Nazir Shohan.
The team is coached by head coach Gary Bivona and assistants Phil Oliveri, Frank Colandro, Ernie Jeffers and Mike Vitti.
Cloonan, coached by Tracy Gamble, finished the season 7-2. Both of its losses came against Rippowam.
