Honors For Stamford's Jackie Robinson Stretch From Dodger Stadium To Space

STAMFORD, Conn. -- As ballplayers around the nation honored Stamford's Jackie Robinson on Wednesday for breaking the color barriers in Major League Baseball, astronaut Terry Virts took the celebration to new heights, according to ESPN.

On the 68th anniversary of Robinson's breakthrough with the Dodgers, Virts wore the team's jersey with No. 42 along with a Brooklyn baseball cap as he orbited the Earth on the International Space Station, ESPN said. 

Rachel Robinson honored her late husband, who lived in Stamford from his playing days until his death in 1973, in a ceremony at Dodger Stadium, ESPN said.

This year, the Dodgers announced it will erect a statue of Robinson, the first of a former player in its stadium.

Robinson was a six-time All-Star, the 1947 major league Rookie of the Year and the National League MVP in 1949, when he won the league's batting title.
