Jessica Buchanan, The Center’s Outreach & Prevention Coordinator, kicked off her interactive workshop to the 80-plus member team with the following question: ‘Think of some stereotypes of men….what are some ‘manly characteristics?’ Buchanan said: “The idea behind this training is break down harmful gender stereotypes for women and men and to explore the unique role that men can have to prevent sexual violence. These opportunities exist for young men much earlier than the college years.”

The Center’s workshop explored tools to identify and interrupt sexual violence and how to become an active bystander. The session was interactive and gave participants an opportunity to have discussions and ask questions in a supportive environment.

“I can’t think of a more difficult place for a young person to speak up than in a high school setting,” Buchanan said “It is impressive that Coach Marinelli is so proactive in equipping his players with the strategies they need to be leaders off the field. The Center hopes to form similar relationships with other teams at high schools throughout Lower Fairfield County.”

Marinelli is beginning his 35th year as coach at New Canaan. His teams have won 10 state titles, and his 308 career wins is second among active coaches in Connecticut and third among all Connecticut coaches.
