Fairfield County Youth Tourney Hits the Hardwood

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – Teams from throughout every Fairfield County community are beginning play this weekend in the season-ending Fairfield County Basketball League tournament.

It is one of the largest in the nation, with 250 teams for boys and girls in grades 5 to 8. The tournament runs through March 11.

Besides Fairfield County, teams from New Haven, Waterbury, Southbury and Madison as well as Mount Vernon, N.Y., are among the other communities with teams in the field.

Among the most compelling divisions will be the sixth-grade boys A Division, where the Fairfield PAL 76ers earned the top seed with a 9-1 league mark and 20-1 overall. The Darien YMCA Blue team finished 9-1 in the division and 29-3 overall, and lost a regular-season game to Fairfield. Defending champion Mount Vernon (7-3) is also a contender.

The Carver Center team from Norwalk went 10-0 in the B South Division and was elevated to the A Flight for the playoffs. Carver (15-2) could meet Darien in the semifinals Saturday at Saxe Middle School in New Canaan at 3:10. Carver plays Ridgefield at 9:20 a.m. at the Easton Community Center in a first-round game, while Darien and Fairfield have first-round byes.

The tournament also includes skills competitions in three-point shooting, one-on-one, speed dribbling and free throw shooting.
