Chelsea Piers Opens To Fanfare In Stamford

STAMFORD, Conn. – Gov. Dan Malloy, Stamford Mayor Michael Pavia, Olympic gold medal-winning figure skater Sarah Hughes and hundreds of local dignitaries and residents gathered Thursday morning on the top floor of the new Chelsea Piers Connecticut to mark the grand opening of the 400,000-square-foot Stamford facility.

The massive sports complex features a hockey rink, figure skating rink, an Olympic-size swimming pool, a 15,000-square-foot gymnastics training center, seven tennis courts, 12 squash courts, batting cages, hardwood courts for basketball and volleyball, and a 100-yard indoor turf for football, lacrosse, soccer, field hockey, softball, baseball and a one-fifth-mile track. The facility also includes a child care and preschool center with a kids "splash zone" swim area.

The opening of Chelsea Piers comes 24 months after construction began on the site of the former Clairol plant on Blachley Road in Stamford.
