Westhill Class of 1977 alumni Pamela S. Karlan addressed the class of nearly 500 students, drawing from her experiences as deputy assistant attorney general in the civil rights division of the U.S. Department of Justice.

"Keep looking for actions and ideals that give your life meaning," she said, "Desire something and pursue it."

She continued, challenging the students to think "what is it you plant to do with your one wild and precious life."

In addition to the Karlan's speech, Superintendent of Schools Winfred Hamilton lauded the graduates for their perseverance, describing how "each and every one of you have had the persistence and grit to overcome your specific challenges. Your diploma is the ticket to exploration and challenges, be sure to stay high in your ambitions and humble in your heart."

Impressively, 85 students received special recognition for their induction as members of the National Honor Society. The top 5 percent of graduates have been accepted at numerous Ivy League and top level universities.

The Westhill Choral Department provided a musical interlude, while the chamber singers and JROTC sang the National Anthem and presented the colors at the start of the ceremony.
