The Grade A Market Newfield Avenue Green Team pitched in to help mulch, plant and clean the school's Wildlife Habitat and Butterfly Garden. Students, parents and school staff also took part in the day.
Alina Lobozza, manager at the Newfield location, and the parent of a student at the school said it's a great way to give back to the community.
"It's a fun place, we have fun doing it and we have wonderful teachers and administrators here," she said about the school.
Yu Lian Thompson pitched in to help because her daughter, Zoe, is a second-grader at the school and because she had some free time.
"I enjoy it and I can contribute to her school," she said, while cleaning out weeds in front of the school.
Art teacher Susan Ramsey helped to coordinate the day's effort and said the Earth Month activity serves a dual purpose.
"We're sprucing it up and taking care of our outdoor classrooms," she said about the habitat and the Butterfly Garden.
It is also part of the students educational experience.
"This is part of their school, part of their everyday life," she said about the garden and habitat areas."They play out here, they observe it, they look at it for science. It's really important."
Among the students taking part were fourth-graders Riley Sullivan, Yasmin Khammouch and Jordan Ng, along with Jordan's sister Kayla, a third-grader.
Khammouch said it was easy to do the work while surrounded by friends.
"It's very nice because I have a lot of friends helping out," she said.
Sullivan said she and her friends work outside a lot partially because they are members of Girl Scout Troop 50362 and working outside is a regular routine for them.
