Turn Of River Principal Takes New Job In Stamford

STAMFORD, Conn. — Michael Fernandes, principal at Turn of River Middle School, will be taking a new position inside the Stamford School District as assistant superintendent for secondary education for next school year.

In his new role, he will report to Associate Superintendent Susan Austin and will play a role in oversight, alignment and implementation of programs in the secondary schools, a statement said. He has served as principal at Turn of River since 2007 and has held numerous other positions in the district, it said.

“Mike has been a strong member of our administrative team for many years,” Superintendent Winifred Hamilton said in the statement. “His leadership will be an asset to my senior team, and we look forward to his coming on board as assistant superintendent.”

He holds a doctorate of education degree in educational leadership from the University of Bridgeport, as well as a master of science degree in school psychology from Miami University, and a bachelor of arts degree in psychology and sociology from Southern Connecticut State University.

Fernandes also served as assistant principal at Fair Haven Middle School in New Haven and as an adjunct professor at the University of Bridgeport, and was chosen by The Efficacy Institute to serve on its Administration and Leadership Practice Advisory Council, the release said.

No replacement for Fernandes as principal at Turn of River was named.
