The council's mission is to promote safe schools and communities while advocating for causes important to youth.

“MYLC is designed so each chapter has the opportunity to identify and focus on a social issue most important to their community,” said Laurie Graziano, MYLC project coordinator at AITE. “Prior to establishing the chapter, the AITE students responded to a survey and chose mental health as its area of focus.”

MYLC is one of the largest youth activism organizations in Connecticut, with chapters in Stamford High School and Westhill High School as well as sister programs at Brian McMahon High School in Norwalk and Greenwich High School.

“I am happy to establish an MYLC chapter at AITE, which has chosen an issue that is relevant and important to our students.” said Principal Tina Rivera. “I am also very proud of the AITE students who have stepped forward to lead the organization here.”

A total of 17 students applied for Executive Committee positions, and The Youth Services Bureau chose six students to serve on the committee. They are Andrew Brito, Mollie Rutz, Allison Tovar, Tanu Balla, Brian Fleischer and Francesca Scotto.

“It's time to bring the issues we face to the forefront of the community,” said Tanu Balla. “Nothing is more powerful for change than a young person fighting or lobbying for something that others try to bury and ignore.”
