Stamford's Stark School Celebrates Flag Day

STAMFORD, Conn. — The annual Flag Day celebration at Stamford’s Julia A. Stark School Thursday morning was more than a celebration of the red, white and blue. It was also a call to service.

Principal Mark Bonasera spoke to the students about the importance of generosity and thinking of others before themselves. “When we help others we make our community and our country a better place,” Bonasera said, adding that the veterans in attendance did their part for everyone when they served their country.

The second-grade choir led the entire school in several patriotic songs and poems, including “You’re a Grand Old Flag” and “Yankee Doodle.” The choir was led by music teachers Stephen Fancher, Gregory Herrmann and Becky Chuta.

One of the highlights of the morning celebration came when teachers Jeff Bianco and Michelle Battinelli sang Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the U.S.A.” with the second grade choir doing the chorus.

All of the students and staff were covered in red, white and blue, and all waved small American flags during the songs.
