STAMFORD, Conn. -- Stamford's Cloonan Middle School recently received the 2013 School of Distinction Award from the College For Every Student National Conference.
Dozens of educators, administrators and scholars from around the state recently attended the 2013 College for Every Student National Conference in Albany, N.Y. The two-day conference welcomed 420 conference staff members, educators and administrators from more than 100 schools.
Emily Korn, a science teacher from Cloonan Middle School, spoke during the workshop “Using CFES Practices to Build STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) Interest & Readiness.”
“You have to get students to buy in, to invest,” Korn said according to a press release. Korn described how the group's “pledge” and its practices can engage students in STEM-related activities and careers by showing them how the skills are used in everyday life. “Students at risk need to know, how does this benefit them."
The nonprofit organization, based in Essex, N.Y., "helps underserved students prepare for, gain access to and succeed in college," according to the release.
