“The answer to prosperity and access to the American Dream and our country being competitive is what happens in buildings like this one,” said Congressman Jim Himes to an auditorium full of students, parents, board members and local dignitaries. “Sometimes, truly gifted and talented children need a different, perhaps smaller, more innovative environment than others. The fact that Beacon is going to provide that option is a spectacular thing for parents, but also for all of us.”
Local dignitaries, such as Mayor David Martin, Hubbard Heights Association President Michael DeWilt, and Fire Commissioner Chief Charles Spaulding attended.
Beacon School takes an individualized approach to education, with an average class size of between four and six students.
“I remember what it’s like to love learning but hate school,” said Meredith Hafer, head of the Beacon School. “I also remember what it was like to find a school that was a good fit for me. How life-changing it was, perhaps, even, how life-saving it was. I often say to my colleagues in education that if you can change the life of even one child, once in your career, all of it is worth it. How lucky we are here at Beacon to know that we are changing lives every day. A school of vision, a haven for the intellectually curious, a compassionate community, a playground of ideas — this is what Beacon has been, is now, and always will be. Above all, we dedicate Beacon’s new home to this legacy."
The event also celebrated the continued restoration of the historical Hubbard Heights neighborhood. Beacon School's new location was formerly Mother of God Academy, which had been closed for more than a decade.
