STAMFORD, Conn. -- Stamford Young Artists Philharmonic is launching an instrument drive to help Stamford public schools, which have music programs but lack the funds to purchase instruments.

The instrument drive and donation will take place Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Westhill High School. SYAP will take donations of gently used orchestral music instruments such as violins, cellos, violas, trumpets and clarinets but not limited to these instruments.

The instruments will be collected at the lower-level auditorium entrance during rehearsal. After Monday, instruments can be dropped off at Cloonan Middle School's main office to the attention of strings teacher Wendy Delson.

The donated instruments will benefit public schools with underfunded music programs in the Stamford area that need instruments but can’t afford them. The instrument drive was inspired by the success of similar instrument drives across the country, including one launched by radio station WQXR that provided much-needed instruments for New York City public schools.

“We believe in the power of music to change lives, and we know that many students who study music get better grades and go on to college. Our mission is to help bring the power of music to as many students as possible and that’s why we are initiating this instrument drive” said Christian Capocaccia, SYAP’s music director.

For more information about the instrument drive, contact TD Ellis at td@syap.org or Wendy Delson at wdelson@stamfordct.gov.

SYAP is composed of talented young musicians from southern Connecticut and northern Westchester counties and who train and perform in three orchestras: Young Strings Ensemble, Young People’s Symphony, and Young Artists Philharmonic. SYAP’s performance season is from September to May of each year. SYAP’s three ensembles will rehearse on Mondays from 5-9:30 p.m. at Westhill High School, 125 Roxbury Road, Stamford.
