Stamford Test Scores Dip for Grades 3-8, Rise For 10th Graders

STAMFORD, Conn. — Students in Stamford Public Schools largely followed the statewide trend of decreasing standardized test scores, according to data released Tuesday.

Stamford's CMT and CAPT scores followed statewide results, showing decreases for the CMT and increases for the CAPT.

“Student performance data on the CMT [Connecticut Mastery Tests] show decreases in all grades and content areas as compared to last year,” a news release from the State Department of Education, said. The CMTs were taken in March by all public school students in grades three to eight.

While statewide, 2013 CMT results declined in the percentage of students scoring at goal in all areas tested -- reading, writing, math and science, Stamford saw slight increases in sixth-grade math and reading and in eighth-grade math, reading, and science.

The state Department of Education blamed the transition to Common Core standards in many districts is a reason for the drop.

On the Connecticut Academic Performance Test, taken by 10th-graders, the percentage of students at goal in Stamford increased in math, reading, and writing and remained the same in science. Statewide there was an increase in each subject, except for writing which saw a decrease.
