STAMFORD, Conn. -- The Stamford Public Education Foundation will sponsor a park cleanup and rebuild at Cedar Street Park, 11 Cedar St., between Ludlow and Henry streets, in Stamford’s South End.

The event's rescheduled date has been set for Saturday, April 11. It will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This park rebuild is being done in cooperation with The University of Connecticut-Stamford, Newfield Elementary School, Hart Magnet Elementary School and the City of Stamford Recreation Division.

SPEF partners with UConn-Stamford to deliver a Service-Learning program to fifth grade students at Newfield Elementary and Hart Magnet Elementary Schools. The program engages 26 UConn students from two courses, The Family School Partnership and Low-Income Families, both taught by Human Development Professor Monica Miller-Smith.

University students serve as mentors to more than 90 fifth grade students at Hart; earlier in the school year they mentored 87 fifth grade students at Newfield students.

During weekly mentoring sessions, mentors and mentees discuss topics related to servicelearning, including civic engagement, community service, and leadership. Both groups of students, along with their parents/guardians, will be participating in the park rebuild.

Activities planned for Saturday, April 11, include general cleaning, removing old plants, replacing a basketball net, painting asphalt games, and building a chalkboard wall.

This community event is sponsored by SPEF, Costco of Norwalk, Karp’s True Value of Stamford, The Home Depot of Norwalk, Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, Le Pain Quotidien - Bakery & Communal Table, Trader Joe’s of Stamford, and Jenna Marie’s Deli.
