Three of the best plants from each group will be displayed at the Stamford Government Center Lobby where they will be judged by local horticulturists and ribbons awarded at the Recognition Event from 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 14.

The event is set to feature exhibits featuring the Green Initiative for Vegetables in Education program, a school community gardens program launched in 2010 by Pam Sloane a retired Stamford Public Schools teacher, and KIDS’ Fitness and Nutrition Services, a partnership of the Stamford Hospital and the Childhood Obesity Task Force, on display during daily lobby hours.

The first Lettuce Challenge Contest was held in May 2011 in association with The Stamford Garden Club’s “Timescapes” Flower Show.

"Due to the positive feedback of students and teachers the Lettuce Challenge Contest has been held annually since 2012 at the Stamford Government Center," according to the release.

"The Fourth Annual Lettuce Challenge Contest is sponsored by The Stamford Garden Club, which is most appreciative of the teachers who are assisting their students with this project," the press release said.

"Special thanks is given to Beth Eiseman, Curriculum Associate for Science in the Stamford Public Schools, who recognized that the Lettuce Challenge Contest is a fun activity which supports school curriculum related to the science of growing plants, nutrition and health. The Stamford Garden Club is eager to encourage gardening by children and show them how fun growing vegetables can be."

The Stamford Government Center is located at 888 Washington Blvd. in Stamford.
