Updated, 5:50 p.m. STAMFORD, Conn.  — Stamford Public Schools will be open on Veterans Day this year, a statement from Superintendent Winifred Hamilton said.

Being open on Monday will up make for one of the six days of missed classes caused by Hurricane Sandy, the statement said.

The schools were looking to find any day that could be gained back for lost instructional time, it said. Schools were closed from Oct. 29 through Nov. 6. Darien and Greenwich will also have school Nov. 12, the statement said.

Hamilton said she has great respect for veterans in the city and has reached out to leaders in the veterans community to assure them that each school will have some recognition and appreciation for their service.

“I know this is an emotional issue, which has made this decision a difficult one. However, my responsibility to the students of Stamford obligates me to take the recent loss of instruction very seriously and recapture valuable time in the classroom,” Hamilton said in the statement.

In addition to Veterans Day, the school district extended its calendar by four days, which were originally planned for snow days, Hamilton said in a phone interview. If there are any other school days postponed because of weather, the days will be made up during the April break, Hamilton said, adding that she will look for other days that may be exchanged for weather days.

She is hoping that the winter is not bad enough to postpone any more school days so students don’t miss any more classroom time. Last year, there were days off early in the year due to Hurricane Irene and then none for the rest of the year.

“I don’t have a crystal ball,” Hamilton said of what this winter’s weather may bring.
