Kim is currently Head of School for the Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama in Honolulu, a position he has held since 2012. He previously spent nine years as superintendent in two New Jersey school districts.
Kim was born and raised in Hawaii, is a graduate of Cornell University, and served four years as a lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps.
The Board of Education selected Kim after an extensive search, which began in October and was conducted by executive search firm Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates. The search included 17 focus groups with stakeholders including administrators, staff, union leaders, students, parents, elected officials and community members.
“The board is very confident in the thoroughness of the selection process and its decision in choosing Earl Kim as the new superintendent for Stamford,” said BOE President Geoff Alswanger. “We reviewed many highly qualified candidates over the past few months, and the board agrees that Mr. Kim brings exactly the right mix of leadership, analytical and process skills, as well as the experience and collaborative approach necessary to successfully lead our district in coming years.”
Kim began his career in education through the Alternate Route Program in New Jersey, where he was a math teacher, a coach, an assistant principal, and a principal. He was named New Jersey Principal of the Year in 2002. In 2003, he began serving as superintendent of the Verona Township in New Jersey, for five years, before becoming superintendent of the Montgomery Township, where he served for four years.
“It is an honor to be appointed Superintendent of Schools in such a wonderful community,” said Kim. “I look forward to building on the good work of those caring and committed educators, board members, and community members who have come before me, and to serving the students and staff of the Stamford Public Schools.”
A total of 25 candidates applied for the position and eight were brought forth to the BOE for its consideration. The BOE interviewed six candidates and invited three back for a second interview before coming to its final decision.
“I am very pleased with the choice for our next superintendent," said Stamford Mayor David Martin. "Mr. Kim has a proven record as a strong advocate for children and high academic excellence. I am confident that Mr. Kim’s background and prior experience with diverse school districts and children will allow our district to thrive and grow. His passion and belief that all students can succeed no matter their background is compelling and important in a diverse district like Stamford.
Kim and his family plan to reside in Stamford.
