STAMFORD, Conn. -- Stamford Public Schools has announced a districtwide fund-raising program beginning Monday, March 3, to support The Sandy Ground: Where Angels Play Foundation.

Each school will have water bottles to collect donations from students, families, and staff throughout the three-week fund-raiser.

The foundation plans to build a playground in Stamford this spring, one of 26 playgrounds in areas hit hard by Superstorm Sandy to honor the memory of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims.

Stamford’s playground will be built at West Beach and will commemorate Jesse Lewis.

Firefighters from the nine Stamford Fire Department Stations have volunteered to collect the donations for delivery to First County Bank, which has agreed to count the coins and make the deposits for the schools.

“Our district is excited to be part of this special fund-raising event,”  Stamford Public Schools Superintendent Winifred Hamilton said in a statement. “Raising money for a playground in our town to honor a victim of Sandy Hook seems like a perfect way to bring our schools together to benefit our community. And this campaign is a true communitywide effort. ”
