Cloonan is one of only five schools nationwide to receive the honor all of the five years that the “School of Distinction” has been awarded.

CFES is a global leader in helping underserved students to get to and through college, and to be ready to enter the workforce.

This year, 33 schools across the country, and for the first time, a school in Ireland, are recognized as schools with exemplary programs that incorporate the three CFES core practices: leadership through service, mentoring and pathways to college.

“Research has proven that early college awareness is key to students’ success,” said CFES President and CEO Rick Dalton. “Cloonan Middle School has shown and continues to show their commitment to providing students with the tools and skills they need to be college-ready.”

Schools of Distinction offer schoolwide activities that enable all students and their families to learn about the college application process, financial aid and strategies that promote future college attendance.

Attaining the School of Distinction status recognizes a successful yearlong journey to build college readiness schoolwide.

Sixth-graders at Cloonan Middle School met weekly with their mentors from corporations, colleges and the community. Sessions focused on goal setting, identifying and overcoming academic challenges, participating in extracurricular activities, learning about college and career options, and developing essential skills for college.

To benefit the entire school, CFES leaders developed the Scholar Power Speaker Series that featured role models from diverse professions and backgrounds that gave firsthand accounts of their paths to colleges and professions, as well as the challenges and joys of being a leader.
