Stamford Officials Hold Off Naming New School

STAMFORD, Conn. -- Despite a strong push to name a new Stamford elementary school after baseball legend Jackie Robinson, school officials say they'll focus now on getting the elementary school up and running in the former Sacred Heart Academy, the Stamford Advocate reports.

The former Sacred Heart Academy will temporarily be known as New School at 200 Strawberry Hill until a permanent name is decided, the Stamford Advocate reports.

For now, the school will be known as New School at 200 Strawberry Hill, an extension of Rogers Magnet Elementary. Once home to the all-girls Catholic Sacred Heart Academy, the school is starting this year with about 200 kindergartners and first-graders, and will eventually be expanded to go through eighth-grade, the Stamford Advocate says.

The local NAACP, with the support of the Jackie Robinson Park of Fame, suggested naming the school after Robinson, who lived in Stamford until his death in 1972. In addition to being the first black player in Major League Baseball, Robinson was a supporter of Civil Rights and access to education, the Stamford Advocate reports.

Stamford school officials say they'll wait until after school starts Sept. 1 to consider the naming process. They promise all suggestions will be welcomed while parents are asking that students also be included in the process, the Stamford Advocate says.
