The program, now in its fifth year, provides students in kindergarten through third grade with science instruction over the summer both in the classroom and with hands-on activities at SoundWaters, a release said. The lessons follow Connecticut State Core Science Guidelines.
"Children get engaged in activities that raise their science knowledge, as well as their literacy and reading grade levels," Linda Levy, executive director of Stamford Achieves, said in the release.
The students who participate in the program come from the Chester Addison Community Center and NEON of Stamford, the release said. The organization has found that the 83 percent of the students who previously participated in the “At the Beach and in the Sea” maintained or increased test scores.
"These positive findings," said Levy, "support the importance of using 'out of school time' to improve the skills of children caught in the achievement gap.”
The program will begin July 8 and run through Aug. 2, with four classes a week, with each class lasting for two hours.
