Stamford Jeweler Helps Kids Honor Their Mothers

STAMFORD, Conn. — A trio of fourth-graders at Westover Magnet Elementary School in Stamford did their Mother’s Day shopping without spending a dime. All three were winners of Nagi Jewelers’ annual essay writing contest.

Nagi Osta and his son, Jeff, chose the essays written by Angela Bruno, Skye McLeod and Nicholas Lappas, though they said all were very good and that any of the some 140 entered in the contest could have won. The three winners were given sterling silver lockets for their mothers.

“They all came from the heart,” Osta said, describing the essays titled “Love Is. ...”

“I am excited to be giving it to my mom,” Angela said after she found out she had won. She added that she plans to buy flowers for her mother also.

“She is going to be very happy,” Nicholas said as his friends congratulated him.

Osta’s also supplied the entire fourth grade with cookies and juice to honor the pupils for their work. The Ostas have run the contest since their kids were students at Westover. Now their kids help them organize it.

“It still has the same feeling,” Jeff Osta said of his former school, adding that he usually sneaks off to visit his old teachers.
