STAMFORD, Conn. - Stamford Mayor David Martin celebrated the beginning of construction on an inter-district magnet school at a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday morning.

The school will be located in a three-story building on Strawberry Hill Ave. that was most recently rented and used by the Stanwich School of Greenwich for its upper grades . Before the building was occupied by Stanwich, it served as the longtime home of Sacred Heart Academy.

Other buildings on the property include the C.J. Starr Barn and Carriage House, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 .

In 2014, the city of Stamford finalized a deal to buy the former school building and 10-acre campus at 200 Strawberry Hill Ave. from the Sisters of St. Joseph for $9.75 million.

“This is a truly historic day in the city of Stamford," Martin said in 2014. "I am proud and humbled by the city’s acquisition of this incredible property and thank the many individuals on our boards and in City Hall who made this day come to fruition."

Through a collaboration between the city, the Board of Education, the legislative delegation, and the state, $67 million was secured for this project during the 2015 legislative session.

Students in kindergarten through first grade are expected to begin at the new school in September.
