STAMFORD, Conn. — Stamford called for a mandatory evacuation for residents living in flood zones as Hurricane Sandy bears down on the city.

Various streets in the Dolphin Cove, Shippan, Wallacks Point and the Cove neighborhoods were told to evacuate. A complete list of the streets in areas one and two of the Sea, Lake and Overland Surge from Hurricanes Inundation Map are listed below. The map is attached.

The city opened up three shelters at Scofield Magnet Middle School, 641 Scofieldtown Road, Rippowam Magnet Middle School, 381 High Ridge Road, and Stamford High School, 55 Strawberry Hill Ave., and will open up Westhill High School, 125 Roxbury Road, if needed.

Stamford High School has room for pets.

Stamford Public Schools will be closed for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Winifred Hamilton said. Parents should monitor the schools’ website and Twitter account for updates, she said.

The city’s parks and beaches have been closed and Mayor Michael Pavia urges all residents to make sure others stay in as well. He said during Hurricane Irene people were outside and put themselves in danger.

“We will not be able to rescue you,” Pavia said.  Police have hired extra officers to be on duty during the storm helping the Office of Operations and Stamford Fire & Rescue, Chief Jon Fontneau said.

City officials will remain at the Stamford Government Center in the Emergency Operations Center, and expect Frankenstorm to hit the area starting around 10 p.m.

Another press conference is scheduled at 8 p.m.
