Superintendent of Schools Bill McKersie has announced the appointment of Amy Lynn DeNicola. Her appointment is effective July.

DeNicola is leaving her job as the Assistant Director of Special Education for the Stamford Public Schools and brings 18 years of teaching and leadership experience in special education, as she returns to Greenwich Public Schools.

DeNicola was a special education teacher and coach in the Greenwich school system from 2001 to 2011, before moving to the Stamford Public Schools in an administrative role.

"Her experience in working with preschool staff on incorporating the Early Learning Developmental Standards will help continue the efforts of retiring Preschool Program Coordinator Dr. Dolores Kenny and the GPS preschool staff," said Director of Pupil Personnel Services Mary Forde of her appointment.

The search for candidates involved widespread recruitment efforts, multiple interviews, and extensive reference and background checks, according to the announcement.

As assistant director of special education for the Stamford Public Schools since 2011, DeNicola was responsible for the supervision and evaluation of special education staff, overseeing the assessment of students receiving special education services, and providing professional development, programs and services that support the needs of students and staff.

From 2001 to 2011, DeNicola served as a special education teacher and coach at the elementary and secondary levels for the Greenwich Public Schools.

She began her career as a kindergarten teacher for the City of New York (1996-1998), and then from 1998 to 2001 worked with the special needs population as a homebound instructor for St. Mary’s Hospital, Bayside, N.Y. (1998-2000), a special education teacher at Jennie Knauff Children’s Center Preschool (1998-2000) and then at John Paulding Elementary School, Tarrytown, N.Y. (2000-2001.)

DeNicola received a bachelor of science degree in elementary education from Iona College, New Rochelle, N.Y., in 1996; a master of science degree in early childhood education in 1999 and a master of science degree in special education in 2000 from the College of New Rochelle; and an administrative certification from Sacred Heart University, Fairfield, in 2011.
