Now in its third year, the program was created by Frederick C. Flynn in memory of his late wife Susan to provide students entering their senior year of a baccalaureate nursing program the opportunity to acquire knowledge, skills and professional experience at recognized cancer centers.
This year at Stamford Hospital, Samantha Haug, a resident of Kinnelon, N.J., and a nursing student at Sacred Heart University joined Fairfield University nursing students Alexandra Maravic of Whitehouse Station, N.J., and Katie Grosso from Stamford.
During the eight-week course, they are gaining hands-on experience under the preceptorship of dedicated registered nurses in the in-patient and out-patient oncology settings at the hospital.
They will graduate from the program Thursday, Aug. 11.
The goal of the program is to foster career interests and professional development of aspiring oncology nurses.
To be eligible for the fellowship, candidates must have successfully completed their fall junior year semester of a BSN program, have a minimum 3.2 cumulative GPA and be in “good standing” at their school.
In 2015, the program was expanded by Flynn to include nine of the top undergraduate nursing schools as well as 10 leading cancer care hospitals, including institutions such as Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Abramson Cancer Center at Penn Medicine, Johns Hopkins, Massachusetts General Hospital and New York-Presbyterian. Stamford Hospital, which recently joined the Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Care Collaborative, was among the first sites to pilot this program.
