The South School Student Council is organizing the drive to help the nonprofit organization that supports elementary school students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals. Students who qualify for free or reduced meals often do not receive the right amount of nutrition on weekends, which can negatively affect their performance in the classroom, said a press release from organizers.
"Better test scores, improved reading skills, positive behavior, improved health and increased attendance have all been attributed to the success of this program," said the release. "Each Friday during the school year, students supported by Blessings in a Backpack are given a certain amount of food to ensure that they don’t go hungry over the weekend."
The students at South will help to fill those backpacks with food that students can take home so they receive proper nutrition when they are home over the weekends. The backpacks will benefit 100 students at Trailblazers Academy in Stamford.
