Homegrown Music Educator Named Stamford Teacher Of The Year

STAMFORD, Conn. -- Gloria Sinaguglia, a Stamford High School music teacher, is the 2016-17 Stamford Teacher of the Year, and along with other award winners, will be honored from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, May 5 at the University of Connecticut in Stamford.

The SPS annual Teacher of the Year and Spotlight on Teacher Award Program celebration coincides with Teacher Appreciation Week.

Aside from Sinaguglia, the SPS Teacher of the Year and Spotlight on Teachers Award Program committee also named George Beratis, Stamford High School band director as the first finalist, and Chandan Sarkar, Westhill High School math and computer science teacher as a finalist. 

Sinaguglia, Beratis, Sarkar and Teacher of the Year Nominees Jacquelyn Clucus, of Cloonan Middle School, and Maria Miraballes, of Westhill High School and all 28 Spotlight Award Winners will be honored at the event.

Stamford Mayor David Martin said: “Congratulations to Gloria Sinaguglia on this esteemed honor. A product of Stamford Public Schools herself, Gloria embodies the best of Stamford teachers: a dedication and passion for her teaching, and caring for her students. 

"Her 37 years in Stamford have made a difference in many students’ lives, and it is an honor to have her in our school community. I look forward to celebrating her accomplishment, and the success of all of the finalists, on May 5," Martin said.

“Congratulations to Gloria and to the finalists, who are considered by their peers to be among the best teachers in Stamford,” said Stamford Interim Superintendent James Connelly.

“Gloria is an amazing teacher and a wonderful person. She is kind, gracious and caring — her students love her,” said Stamford High School Principal Ray Manka.

Sinaguglia has been a music educator in the district for 37 years, 28 of which have been at Stamford High School. She is a graduate of Westhill High School and attended both elementary and middle schools in Stamford.

Sinaguglia earned a B.A. in music education from the Hartt College of Music at the University of Hartford; an M.A. in education from the University of Bridgeport and an M.A. in learning from Sacred Heart University.
