Could UConn-Stamford End Up On State's Chopping Block?

updated: STAMFORD, Conn. — University of Connecticut President Susan Herbst spelled out to the Legislature's Appropriations Committee on Wednesday just what a proposed $31.2 million budget cut could to mean to UConn and UConn Health, according to the Hartford Courant.

The cut — which represents 5.75 percent of the budget — could mean not filling faculty vacancies and offering fewer classes, the Courant said.

But Herbst said a "continued cycle" of reductions in state aid could eventually lead to closing regional campuses, significantly reducing financial aid and cutting sports, the Courant said.

"UConn has no desire or plan to close the Stamford-Campus, which is growing and successful," UConn said in a statement to the Daily Voice. "The president was making the point that all options will be examined as we consider future cost-cutting possibilities should the cycle of state funding reductions continue."

UConn, which has its main campus in Storrs, also has regional campuses in Stamford, Waterbury, Torrington, Hartford and Avery Point.
