The battle will take place at Roxbury Elementary School, 751 West Hill Road in Stamford.

On Jan. 20, each of the 105 students in Grade 4 were challenged to read from a collection of 80 books representing different genres. After reading a book, students must complete a story map booklet. Each story map includes title, author, setting characters, problem(s), events and solution(s). They also must write responses to Common Core-type questions and provide evidence to support those responses.

Besides reading and writing story maps and responses, students dress as characters from the books and present themselves to their classmates. They practice answering questions related to character, setting, events, problems and solutions.

After 11 weeks of steady reading and preparation, students are ready to do battle.

Each of the five fourth grade homerooms is a team and are divided into panels of three. Questions are posed to each panel in rotation for 16 rounds. If a panel of three answers the question correctly, their team will be awarded five points for the correct title and one point for the correct author.

If the panel does not know the answer, it may pass the question to the entire team. The team then has an additional minute to earn 4 points for the correct title and 1 point for the correct author. Panelists rotate after each round of questions, giving each member of each team the opportunity to be an active participant in the Battle.

At the end of the 16 rounds, the team with the most points wins.

Once the battle is completed, all students celebrate with cake and juice, and they receive a certificate of participation with ribbons and seals based on the number of books read as follows: Bronze Seal, 20 to 34 books; Silver Seal, 35 to 49 books; and Gold Seal, 50 to 80 books.
