The local students won regional entrepreneurship competitions and represented Connecticut and the Westchester County area in the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship National Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge in Silicon Valley, Calif.

Britney Reynolds of Trinity Catholic High in Stamford, Anyira Barnes of Multi-Cultural Magnet School in Bridgeport and Ambar Romero of Kolbe Cathedral High in Bridgeport all received plaques from Mayor Bill Finch before last week’s City Council meeting. Representatives from the Bridgeport school district were also in attendance at the ceremony.

Romero's business plan was recognized as one of the top three in the nation at the October competition in California. Her business proposal was for an online thrift store called "Styles by Ambar," featuring women's clothing and accessories.

The Kolbe junior pointed out that her program boasts a strong philanthropic component. “The website has been operating for six months, and we are basically an online thrift store featuring affordable women’s clothing,” she said. “It’s a great way to shop, and we donate 15 percent of the profits to different women’s charities. We are also very committed to the environment.”

She qualified for the Silicon Valley competition by winning the Fairfield County competition held at the University of Connecticut in Stamford in June. NFTE sponsored the competition and covered the expenses for the West Coast competition.
