STAMFORD, Conn. Twelve Stamford students received help in paying for college receiving the first awards from Stamford Dollars for Scholars.
The awards will provide $23,000 in assistance for the 2012-13 school year, a news release from the organization said. Ten of the recipients will be able to reapply for aid in their second, third, and fourth years in college, the release said.
We are delighted to be able to provide awards to these 12 deserving students, Tony DAmelio, co-president of Stamford Dollars for Scholars , said in the release. But clearly the need here is greater than that. We hope to continue to raise awareness and increase participation by the community and local businesses so that we can help even more students in 2013 and beyond.
The organization was started 10 months ago by DAmelio and Co-President Jim McClafferty , with the help of many others throughout Stamford. All high school seniors attending Stamford schools or living in Stamford were eligible to apply for the awards.
Over 100 people attended the ceremony on Monday at UConn Stamford, including Mayor Michael Pavia, Interim Superintendent Dr. Winifred Hamilton and former Lt. Gov. Michael Fedele.
