Martin focused on several topics that were of interest to the Realtors, including education, taxes, quality of life, safety, employment and transportation. Local Realtors expressed their views that city taxes and education were the top two concerns of potential home buyers.
A new survey rates Stamford as one of the best places to live, based on amenities, quality of life, total crimes, tax rates, weather, and commute times, Martin said. Stamford is also ranked one of the safest cities in New England.
Martin attends many Board of Education meetings and said he is committed to insuring a quality of education for Stamford residents.The percentage of students from Stamford public schools who go on to attend higher education continues to improve and is now at 87 percent, according to the Stamford Board of Realtors.
Martin told the group that Metro-North stations in Stamford now serve more inbound traffic than outbound traffic and that Stamford is more dependent on the success of Metro-North than ever. He would like a 20-year plan to insure that Stamford has a transportation center that supports growth in the upcoming years.
The mayor had just returned from a trip to Hartford where he was trying to gain traction on programs to improve education and for introducing a formula that would tie the amount of mileage of town roads to monies received for road repairs. Stamford has more town roads by mileage than any other town in the state, he said.
Another issue of interest to Realtors and homeowners was the uranium found in Stamford well water. He encouraged the Realtors to raise awareness on the issue and said homeowners and buyers should get well water tested.
The mayor was accompanied by his Chief of Staff Michael Pollard.
