Frederick Lyle, 43, avoided police for months after hitting 23-year-old Victor Padilla Turcios on the sidewalk of Martin Luther King Avenue on June 27, 2018, DailyRecord reports. Turcios died from his injuries 10 days later at Morristown Medical Center.

Lyle will be eligible for parole after serving a minimum of three years in prison, according to the sentence from Judge David Ironson in state Superior Court.

Lyle’s black Nissan sustained significant damage to the front windshield during the crash and was located by police after the hit, the report said.

When officers tried to get in touch with Lyle over the phone the night of the crash, he told them he was currently working in New Brunswick and that he would come back to Morristown for police questioning, according to the report, which cites court documents.

However, Lyle never met with police after the crash and instead stopped all communication with the department, the report said. According to cell phone records, he had been in Morristown during the crash and lied about his whereabouts.

Lyle then admitted to police that he was afraid to meet with police due to his deep criminal record, which includes drug possession and distribution charges. He was labeled as a “violent offender” by County Prosecutor Fredric Knapp following a major drug bust in 2013, the report says.
