Students and staff at six elementary schools in New Rochelle will be using bottled water and water coolers when classes begin next week after results from tests conducted this summer revealed water from 19 fountains and sinks in the buildings contained lead levels that exceeded the limits allowed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, according to lohud.com.
The schools affected by the fountain and sink closures include the Henry Barnard Early Childhood Center, along with the Columbus, Webster, Jefferson, Trinity and Ward elementary schools, according to lohud.com, which reported that similar closures took place at Davis Elementary School in May.
The fountain and sink closures are just the latest to affect students in the area. Earlier this year, school districts in New Jersey, Rockland County and elsewhere in Westchester were forced to close fountains and sinks after elevated lead levels were detected.
According to lohud.com, drinking fountains and sinks are to be tested for lead at New Rochelle’s Isaac Young and Albert Leonard middle schools and New Rochelle High School in the coming months.
