Fort Lee Cultural & Heritage Affairs Administrator Tom Meyers will lead the walk. This walk will honor Ortlip and his family of artists who lived in Fort Lee for the better part of the 20th century and documented the people and history of Fort Lee.
The walk begins at 11 a.m. at the Fort Lee Museum. Parking is on the Palisade Avenue side of the museum.The walk will include stops at the museum and locations on Main Street to include,
- Fire House #1 (mural of history of Fire Co. #1 by Paul Ortlip),
- Borough Hall (Ortlip family paintings of past Mayors of Fort Lee in the Council Chamber)
- Fort Lee Public Library (gallery of the works of Paul Ortlip).
- Fort Lee Post Office on Main Street, which includes New Deal murals of Fort Lee history. The Department of the Treasury’s Section of Fine Arts commissioned these four post office murals. Painted by Henry Schnakenberg, they were installed in 1941.
- Stops also will be made at Main Street businesses displaying the artwork Fort Lee High School students.
Admission for the walking history tour is free and there will be a reception with light refreshments at the library at the conclusion of the walk.
Sponsors include the Fort Lee Business District Alliance, the Fort Lee Regional Chamber of Commerce, Fort Lee High School, the Fort Lee Public Library, and the Fort Lee Historical Society.
