And the Best Decorated Peekskill Storefront is...

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- Many downtown businesses put up holiday storefront displays this month, but only one could be called the best.

As part of its holiday “Peekskill Makes Me Merry” campaign, the Peekskill Business Improvement District sponsored a “Best Dressed Storefront” contest among downtown business owners. The idea was to make the streets of Peekskill more festive for downtown residents and shoppers this holiday season, said Jason Angell, the new BID executive director.

Ten businesses entered the contest in order to vie for a $500 first prize. The participants voted for the winner among themselves. When the votes were tallied it was the combined effort of BeanRunner Cafe and its neighbor the Peekskill Trolley Company that narrowly beat out the Birdsall House and the Quiet Man Pub.

The storefront was designed by local artist Wayne Robinson of the Shimmer studio and features a flat screen television that is currently showing holiday cartoons.

BeanRunner Cafe owner Ted Bitter and Peekskill Trolley Company owner Leslie Masson said they hoped their display at the corner of S. Division and Park streets could be used year-round as a kind of community bulletin board. Masson said the money they won would go towards upkeep of the display.

"We're going to use it to help start what we want to do for the rest of the year with the window," Masson said. "This was quite expensive, more than the prize, but the concept was a good idea so we wanted to get it started."
