Trump Weighing Stamford's Bobby Valentine For Ambassador To Japan

STAMFORD, Conn. — Stamford native Bobby Valentine, who managed the Chiba Lotte Marines in Japan for seven seasons, may be returning to his old stomping grounds in a completely different kind of role.

According to WEEI-FM, President-Elect Donald Trump is considering Valentine, 66, for the post of ambassador to Japan. 

Valentine, who is currently the athletic director at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, remains popular in Japan, where was the first U.S. born manager to win the Japan Series with a championship in 2005.

Valentine played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, California Angels, New York Mets and Seattle Mariners. In addition to the Chiba Lotte Marines, he also managed the Texas Rangers, the New York Mets, and the Boston Red Sox. He also operates the popular Bobby V's sports bar in downtown Stamford.

WEEI-FM cited multiple sources that Valentine is on a short-list of candidates and has taken part in preliminary discussions with Trump’s transition team.

The current ambassador to Japan, appointed in 2013 by President Barack Obama, is Caroline Kennedy.

This would not be the first Trump appointment from Fairfield County. On Wednesday, the president-elect announced that WWE founder Linda McMahon of Greenwich was his pick to lead the Small Business Administration. McMahon also has ties to SHU, where she is a member of the Board of Trustees and where the Student Commons building is named for her
