One bill, H.B. 5387, would set up a task force to look into using military occupational specialty training as a substitute for state license requirements. The task force must make recommendations before the first of next year.
The bill is now headed to Gov. Dannel Malloy’s office, a statement said.
“While enlisted, many soldiers learn highly valuable skills that translate well into related work in the private sector. Rather than forcing these veterans to be retrained, often by individuals less skilled than themselves, we should allow them to put their existing knowledge to use, and to get a head start in their civilian lives,” Leone, D-36th District, said in a statement from his office.
The other bill, S.B. 383, would give municipalities the option to give further property tax exemptions to “100 percent disabled veterans.” The legislation would increase the current income-dependent $6,000 exemption to $9,000, the statement said.
The bill must still be passed by the state House of Representatives.
“Our disabled military veterans have paid an enormous price for the sake of freedoms we all enjoy on a daily basis. For our veterans that are 100 percent fully disabled and therefore severely limited in generating income, this bill will provide welcome relief on their property taxes,” Leone said.
