Stamford Polling Place Randomly Chosen For Audit By State

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- More than a dozen polling places in Fairfield County were among those randomly selected for an audit of election results from the Nov. 8 elections, according to Connecticut Secretary of the State Denise W. Merrill.

Voters enter the gym at the War Memorial in Danbury to cast their ballots on Tuesday, Nov. 8. The state will be conducting hand counts of votes cast at random polling places that used optical scanners.

The hand count of ballots cast from 5 percent of all polling places that used optical scanners will be matched against machine totals.

This will, Merrill said, “affirm the integrity of the vote.”

“Connecticut should be proud to have some of the most stringent audit laws in the country,” Merrill said.

“In an election year that saw various entities attempt to sow the seeds of doubt in the process, this state can be assured that all possible safeguards are in place to count every vote,” she added.

The rights of voters are among the state’s highest priorities, Merrill said.

There were 747 polling places that used optical scan machines on Nov. 8, so Merrill chose 38 primary and 31 alternate locations.

The results of audits will be analyzed by the University of Connecticut, the Secretary of the State’s Office and the State Elections Enforcement Commission.

They will then be made available to the public.

Merrill said that Connecticut has one of the strictest audit statutes in the country and was the first state in New England to require a comprehensive audit of primary results.

The offices subject to audit are: president / vice president and U.S. senator and representative.
