“We have begun to accept things that are slippery,” Martin said during a speaking engagement at the Chester Addison Community Center on the city’s West Side.

He said he would hold a meeting with each city department head explaining that he would hold each of them responsible for how their employees act and explain to them the work standards. Martin would also establish a hotline for employees to call him directly and report actions they believe to be unethical.

“I say Stamford deserves much better,” he said. The recent scandals by city employees has “eroded the confidence” residents have in the government, he said.

The Board of Finance member also would make the city’s government more transparent by posting videos and materials from every town meeting on a new revamped website that would be easier to navigate. Other initiatives he plans to start would include reinstating “Mayor’s Night Out,” both in person and online, and having a “Citizen’s Budget,” which would be easier to understand while also having each line item listed.

“It’s time we open up this government so everyone knows what is going on,” Martin said. He added that as president of the Board of Representatives, he began publishing agendas and minutes online, as well as having meetings recorded.

Martin, a Democrat, was endorsed by the city committee but must win a primary against state Rep. William Tong, D-147, to be on the ballot in November. Also running for mayor is Republic former Lt. Gov. Michael Fedele, petitioning candidate John Zito and Independent Kathleen Murphy.
